The number indicates the percentage of 0.3 micron particles are filtered out by the mask. In this case, N95 masks filter out at least 95% of 0.3 micron particles.
N95 masks should not be confused with KN95 masks. While N95 masks are certified to US standards, KN95 masks are certified to Chinese standards.Both N95 and KN95 masks are rated to filter at least 95% of 0.3 micron airborne particles. However, the two masks are tested to different standards across a number of factors, including total inward leakage, inhalation resistance and exhalation resistance.
