Description
Pelvic stabilisation for an open book fracture
SAM Pelvic sling in Large is a circumferential pelvic belt, designed to stabilise open-book pelvic fractures in the case of a traumatic pelvic injury.
It has been scientifically proven in peer reviewed studies to effectively reduce and stabilise open-book pelvic ring fractures.
What causes an open-book pelvic ring fracture?
Open-book pelvic ring fractures are high impact pelvic injuries, which usually occur due to a vehicle or motorcycle accident. An open-book pelvic ring fracture causes the left and right side of the pelvis to become separated from the front of the rear. As this type of injury is an anteroposterior compression injury, the patient may suffer from major arterial damage and associated blood loss.
Stabilisation of the pelvis via SAM Pelvic Sling aids in reducing major blood loss from the pelvic blood vessels, as well as effectively stabilising the pelvic bones prior to the patient being transported to hospital.
SAM Pelvic Sling in Large – Design
The SAM Pelvic Sling in Large is a one piece design; a fitted strap and autostop buckle, which is force-activated. This allows the pelvic sling to be easily applied quickly and effectively in the case of an emergency.
The narrow and tapered front allows for urinary catheterization, interventional radiology, external fixation and abdominal surgery without removal.
SAM Pelvic Sling Instructions
- Position the belt around the patient’s pelvis, with the belt buckle facing upwards.
- Tighten the strap to achieve the correct compression force – which is indicated by an audible clicking sound.
- The prongs on the buckle will activate automatically when the correct compression is achieved, securing the belt firmly in place.
Features: SAM Pelvic Sling – Large
Patented AUTOSTOP buckle
The SAM AUTOSTOP buckle is designed so it cannot be over or under tightened upon application. As the correct compressive force is reached, two prongs activate from the belt buckle, and there is an audible ‘click’ indicating the belt is correctly secured.
Low-friction sliding base
Low friction materials cover the posterior base of the pelvic sling to allow for easier transfers of the patient, without the belt material catching on any surfaces.
Precision strap
The SAM strap has precisely-engineered holes, which are designed to lock with the AUTOSTOP buckle once optimal compressive force is achieved.
Radiolucent material
The SAM Pelvic Sling in Large is made from radiolucent material which allows for X-rays and CT-scans to be performed without sling removal.
3 sizes available
The SAM Pelvic Sling is available in 3 sizes – Small, Medium, and Large.
By having the complete set of Small, Medium and Large sizes, almost any body type will be catered for in the case of an emergency.

Operating principle
The correct compression force is 150N of circumferential pressure. When this force is reached upon application, the SAM AUTOSTOP buckle’s prongs extend and audibly click to confirm the sling is secured firmly in place.
