Description
Stabilisation for an open book pelvic fracture
SAM Pelvic sling in Small is a force-controlled circumferential pelvic belt, designed to stabilise open-book pelvic fractures.
It has been scientifically proven in peer reviewed studies to effectively reduce and stabilise open-book pelvic ring fractures.
What is an open book pelvic fracture?
Open-book pelvic ring fractures result from an anteroposterior compression injury to the pelvis, where both the left and right halves of the pelvis are separated from the front and the rear. This type of fracture is serious and is usually the result of a high-energy severe trauma such as a vehicle or motorcycle accident. Immediate stabilisation of the pelvis post-injury is required prior to the patient being transported.
Major arterial damage and subsequent blood loss are associated with this type of injury. Stabilisation of the pelvic ring reduces blood loss from the pelvic vessels.
SAM Pelvic Sling in Small – Design
The first of its kind, the SAM Pelvic Sling has an optimised one-piece design.
The narrow and tapered front allows for urinary catheterization, interventional radiology, external fixation and abdominal surgery without removal.
SAM Pelvic Sling Instructions
- Place the belt around the trauma patient’s pelvic area, with the belt facing upwards.
- Pull strap to achieve correct compression force – this is indicated by an audible clicking sound.
- The prongs will automatically activate, securing the belt.
Features
Low-friction posterior slider
Low friction materials covering the back of the pelvic sling allow for easier transfers following severe pelvic trauma to the patient.
AUTOSTOP buckle
The patented SAM AUTOSTOP buckle is designed to avoid over-tightening or under-tightening the SAM Pelvic Sling. Once optimal compressive force is reached, two prongs activate, and there is an audible ‘click’ to confirm the correct application. The sling is secured in place by the hook and loop system strap.
Precision strap
Precisely-engineered holes lock with the AUTOSTOP buckle, allowing for easy and quick application in an emergency. The hook and loop strap provides secure fastening, whilst achieving optimal compressive force.
Radiolucent material
All materials on the SAM Pelvic Sling in Small are radiolucent – except from the buckle’s two stainless steel springs. This allows for X-rays and CT-scans to be performed without removal of the sling.
3 sizes available
The SAM Pelvic Sling is available in 3 sizes – Small, Medium, and Large. The Standard size fits 95% of the adult population. The complete set of Small, Medium and Large will fit almost any body type.

Operating principle
The correct compression force is reached when 150N of circumferential pressure is reached. This is indicated by the SAM AUTOSTOP buckle’s prongs extending through the precision strap.
