Face masks are one of the best ways to protect against the transmission of airborne particulates – including airborne viruses such as COVID-19. However, not all face masks are the same. The N95 is one of the best rated face coverings when it comes to respiratory protection.
What does N95 mean? In this article, we answer all your questions about N95 face masks – including whether they’re effective, who should wear them and how they compare to other masks.
What does N95 mean?
N95 masks (also known as N95 respirators) are face masks which are designed to filter out particles as small as 0.3 microns.
They were originally used in the construction and mining industries to protect the wearer from breathing in harmful particles in the environment. More recently, N95 masks are used in healthcare settings to prevent the spread of harmful microorganisms and infectious diseases.
When worn correctly, N95 masks effectively reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and the omicron and delta strains. An N95 mask prevents the wearer breathing in infected particles as well as spreading infected droplets from their own mouth and nose.
Are P2 masks the same as N95?
P2 masks (also known as P2 respirators) are very similar to N95 masks. The difference comes down to the classification and certification systems in different countries.
P2 is an Australian / New Zealand certification. The ‘P’ stands for particulate and the number ‘2’ indicates that the mask is rated for class 2 particulate hazards. P2 masks filter out at least 94% of airborne particles.
N95 is a United States classification. The ‘N’ classification is used for masks that are suitable for dry dust and soluble aerosols. The number indicates the percentage of 0.3 micron particles are filtered out by the mask. In this case, N95 masks filter out at least 95% of 0.3 micron particles.
KN95 masks vs N95 masks
N95 masks should not be confused with KN95 masks. While N95 masks are certified to US standards, KN95 masks are certified to Chinese standards.
Both N95 and KN95 masks are rated to filter at least 95% of 0.3 micron airborne particles. However, the two masks are tested to different standards across a number of factors, including total inward leakage, inhalation resistance and exhalation resistance.
Are N95 masks effective?
N95 masks filter out at least 95% of airborne particles. Compared to surgical masks and reusable cloth masks, they offer a much higher level of protection against the spread of airborne viruses such as COVID-19.
At LFA First Response, we stock BYD N95 masks. The benefits of BYD N95 masks include:
-
- Filters at least 95% of airborne particles and liquid aerosols not containing oil
- Very close fit to the face
- Around the head straps help create a tight seal
- Comfortable and easy to breathe
Who should wear an N95 mask?
N95 or P2 particulate respirators are recommended in health care settings, especially when treating high risk patients or patients who are suspected or known to be a COVID-19 case.
It’s important that personal protective equipment for health care workers offers a high level of respiratory protection. A well fitted N95 mask not only protects the health care workers but also reduces the risk of cross infection in health care settings. Fit testing is important to ensure the mask is worn properly with no air leaks.
N95 masks can also be worn in non-healthcare settings for better protection, especially for people who are immunocompromised. Some sources recommend upgrading to N95 respirators will better protect our communities from the omicron and delta variants.
Are N95 masks reusable?
N95 masks are not reusable – they are designed to be worn once and then disposed of. It’s important not to reuse disposable masks, especially in healthcare settings, as they become less effective after the first use.
Handling a contaminated mask may spread infection, putting yourself and others at risk. You should not use any mask if it is damaged, soiled or wet.
Other face mask options
Particulate respirators like N95 and P2 masks are considered the most effective at preventing the spread of COVID-19. However, other types of face masks can also provide protection from airborne particulates when worn properly.
Surgical masks
Surgical masks (also known as medical masks) are single-use masks that are made with a non woven polypropylene layer. Surgical masks are typically blue on the outside and white on the inside. They come in varying levels of protection and should provide a proper fit over your mouth, nose and chin to prevent leakages.
Reusable cloth masks
Cloth masks are effective at preventing the spread of airborne particles if they have at least two layers of material and are well-fitted. You should wash reusable masks after every use. Make sure the mask is completely dry before using it again.
