First aid for venomous bites

What To Do

1. Call 000 immediately: Request an ambulance. In remote areas, activate your emergency beacon or contact the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

2. Keep the person completely still: Lie them down and keep them calm. Any movement accelerates venom spread through the lymphatic system.

3. Do NOT wash the bite site: Venom residue on the skin helps hospital staff identify the species and select the correct antivenom.

4. Apply a pressure bandage over the bite: Use a snake bite bandage with an indicator if available. Bandage firmly, as tight as you would for a sprained ankle, but not so tight it cuts off blood circulation.

5. Bandage the entire limb: Starting from fingers or toes, wrap upward toward the body, covering as much of the limb as possible.

6. Splint and immobilise: Apply a rigid splint to prevent any limb movement whatsoever.

7. Mark the bite site: Circle the bite location on the outside of the bandage with a pen. Note the time.

8. Stay with the patient: Monitor breathing and consciousness. Do not remove bandages until medical professionals arrive, even if symptoms seem to improve.

What NOT To Do

• Do NOT cut the bite or attempt to suck out venom

• Do NOT apply an arterial tourniquet

• Do NOT wash the bite area

• Do NOT let the patient walk or move

• Do NOT try to catch or kill the snake or spider

Important: The Pressure Immobilisation Technique is recommended for all Australian snake bites and funnel-web spider bites. However, PIT is NOT recommended for redback spider bites; apply a cold pack and seek medical attention instead.
